Expert Panel Speed Round - Meet Amanda Rodger, Registered General Nurse
As a Registered General Nurse, Amanda Rodger has been on the Speed Medical Expert Panel for three years and brings with her over 25 years’ experience in the healthcare industry. From conducting telehealth interviews and medicals, to providing investigations in clients’ homes, Amanda works with clients around her own schedule.
Why did you choose a career in nursing?
I got into nursing as it’s a profession where you can make a difference to peoples’ lives in many different ways, every day! The job is both rewarding and interesting and for me it has been a job for life, as there are so many different roles and opportunities to choose from.
What is your role on the Speed Medical Expert Panel?
I specialise in telehealth interviews and medicals/ home investigations. With over 25 years’ experience, I’m able to support clients with their case, remaining on hand every step of the way.
What is a typical day on the Expert Panel like for you?
Being on the panel enables me to work flexibly, and fit my job around my schedule and lifestyle. Every day is different, however, I usually begin the day by dropping my son off at school, then come home to conduct telehealth interviews from 10am to 1pm. I then carry out a Medical at 2pm, involving taking a blood sample and asking clients about their medical history.
What made you decide to move into the private healthcare sector?
Having worked in the NHS for so long, I decided to take a break from that and get into work that could complement my lifestyle and other roles. The change I wanted was provided by my career move to Speed Medical who was able to offer a wide range of career opportunities to suit me.
What do you enjoy most about working on the Expert Panel?
I enjoy working on the Expert Panel because it means I constantly learn more about people, which I feel makes me a better nurse. I have to say, the financial benefits of doing something new and exciting are great too - helping me save towards a new kitchen! Working from home is total bliss.
What challenges do you face and how do you overcome them?
Although I am busy and some cases take longer than others, I understand it is crucial for me to try to stay within my time schedule with clients to avoid any inconveniences for them. The Speed Medical team is great as they adjust my schedule if they see a complex case is taking longer – this works really well and keeps everybody happy.
How has working on the Speed Medical Expert Panel benefitted you and your career?
Working on the Speed Medical Expert Panel has been a refreshing change which boosted my confidence and allowed me to develop my career in the private sector. Through taking on this new opportunity, I have been able to advance my skills and knowledge and even increase my earning capabilities.
Where have you worked previously?
I have had a number of roles within the nursing field over the past 25 years, with the role of Respiratory Nurse Specialist being my key vocation. I started out as a Senior Critical Care Nurse, and my most recent role was as an Expert Clinical Screening Nurse/ Tele-interviewer (Locum).
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job and why?
By utilising my experience and helping clients through their insurance journey, my job is rewarding as I can see the difference my hard work and dedication makes. The Speed Health team is always supportive and friendly, and gives me fantastic feedback and motivation, which makes me feel appreciated for the work that I do.
